On June 4, 2019, the City of Jackson passed an amendment to its Animal Control Ordinance requiring city dog and cat owners to spay or neuter their pets within 30 days after the pet is 6 months old. The changes took effect Sept. 1, 2019.

All pet owners must spay/neuter their dogs and cats within 30 days after the pet’s 6-month birthday or obtain a city permit, which is $20 per pet per year. Pet owners who do not comply face city fines of up to $50 per violation per day.


  • Police dogs
  • Search and rescue dogs
  • Service dogs
  • Herding/livestock guardian/hunting dogs
  • Show dogs with AKC certification

Other exceptions are made for shelters and boarding facilities or pets with a letter from a vet.
